SUMMARY: Mom said she would back when it rained. I believe her!
In “Be With You”, it begins with Jung Ji-ho reading himself a story. An adult would not believe it. But he’s about 8 years old and believes it with all of his heart. A momma penguin had to go up to the sky. But she promised her baby penguin that she would come when it rained. Meanwhile, she lived in a place called Cloudland, and every day she looked down through a hole in a cloud to watch her baby penguin.
One day, it rained and the momma penguin came to earth. She and her baby penguin spent a lot of time together, but the time came when she had to go back to Cloudland. Baby penguin understood and was very happy for the time they spent together. The End.
Jung Ji-ho spent every day hoping that it would rain. His mother, Im Soo-ah, had been very sick and passed away. His father, Jung Woo-jin, did not explain death to him, especially the fact that it was permanent, and when people pass away, they don’t come back. Jung Woo-jin‘s heart was broken, and he didn’t want his son to feel such pain at a tender age. So he let him hold on to the belief that his mom would come back one day when it rained. Unlike his son, he didn’t look forward to a rainy day. But one day … it rained!
Jung Ji-ho was so excited, and there was nothing Jung Woo-jin could do to curb his enthusiasm. His son knew the exact place to go and wait for his mom, and he was 100% confident that she would come. So they went there and they waited. It rained and rained and finally it stopped raining.
But? Where was his mother? Did something happen to her? She was supposed to come. Jung Woo-jin was at a loss for words. He didn’t know how to explain that his mother couldn’t come back from “Cloudland”.
There was a tunnel near the place where they had waited. It was dark, but both father and son could see that someone was inside the tunnel, and it appeared to be a woman. IT’S MOM!!! Jung Ji-ho knew it was her! He knew she would come. On the other hand, Jung Woo-jin was confused because he was looking at a woman who looked like his deceased wife. But she couldn’t possibly be his wife. Could she? It can’t be! Is the story about the penguin TRUE?
Jung Ji-ho had decided that the lady in the tunnel was definitely his mom. Jung Woo-jin thought that whoever she was, it was obvious that she needed assistance, so he would help her. After asking her a few questions, both father and son were doubly baffled. The woman didn’t know who she was. She had no memory at all, including how she ended up in the tunnel.
What could they do? There were probably several things they could have done, such as check for missing persons reports. That would be logical and practical. But Jung Ji-ho was already convinced his mom had returned. And Jung Woo-jin wondered if his wife might have returned. He loved her dearly and had really missed her. So! They took her home and welcomed her, as if she were Im Soo-ah, beloved wife and mother.
My personal rating is the same as Viki.
“Be With You” is predictable but irresistibly sweet and charming! From the moment you see that momma penguin peeping through the cloud at her baby penguin on earth, your heart melts. The perfect weekend movie treat for fans of So Ji-sub.
