The impending release of the Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy collection on June 13 is rapidly approaching, and the team at Wizards of the Coast has been slowly trickling out new cards daily in the run-up. Most recently, the full collection of 53 Art Cards was revealed, and all of them are beautiful.
However, some stand out more than others, and, as someone who is always attracted by pretty art, I can’t help but have some favorites. Here are, in my opinion, the 10 most stunning MTG x FF Art Cards.
This card is so cute, and you can’t help but feel happy when you look at it. Stiltzkin has such an adorable smile, and the design of the card really brings him to life in a new way, complete with a glimpse of Vivi in the background. Honestly, I just want to give Stiltzkin all my money all over again.
Final Fantasy X has a lot of memorable moments, but perhaps none is more beloved to the fandom than Tidus and Yuna’s kiss in Lake Macalania. It’s a touching moment, and the stunning artwork of this card is enough to revive those long-squashed memories of the first time you bore witness to it.
As an FFXIV player, this card is especially evocative for me. Depicting one of the more challenging dungeon bosses from Amaurot, The First Beast, this card reminds me of that feeling I had when I first encountered the creepy horned worm with suspiciously human teeth. It’s definitely creepy, but that does nothing to detract from the stunningly drawn art on this Magic: The Gathering card.
Depicting Sephiroth during the fiery attack on Nibelheim in Final Fantasy VII, this card has some elements of traditional Japanese art to it that really capture the eye and the moment. There’s something almost dualistic about this card, with the shadow across Sephiroth’s face breaking just enough for his small smile to show, and it’s enough to give you chills if you’re familiar with the story.
Look, Chocobos are synonymous with Final Fantasy at this point. They’ve appeared as faithful companions in every Final Fantasy to date, and this card by Montalto really shows off their more playful side, especially when it comes to their favorite snack of Gysahl Greens. Look at those happy eyes.
Vivi is an icon in the world of Final Fantasy, and I couldn’t write this out without including this utterly gorgeous card. Vivi first appeared in Final Fantasy IX, and has gone on to become one of the most well-known characters from the series. Infante is a fan of Final Fantasy, and they’re also responsible for the artwork on Traveling Chocobo, the Serialized card of the Final Fantasy collection.
Kefka is a personal favorite from both Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy XIV. He’s a chaotic court jester turned god of magic, with a penchant for destruction that leaves fire in his wake. This Magic: The Gathering card, gorgeously illustrated by Nguyen, perfectly captures the personality of the character, and you can’t help but feel slightly threatened by the stance of Kefka in the image.
I’m a sucker for traditional Japanese art, and there are definitely elements of that present in the artwork of this card. The vibrant colors, the depiction of the Dragon King himself, and the bright light emanating from its vicious jaws – this card is stunning. Everywhere you look, there’s something new to discover, and the details are uncountable.
Alizadeh is responsible for multiple gorgeous cards from the MTG x FF set, including Suken Ruins and Underground River, but this sweeping view of The Royal City of Rabanastre is by far the most breathtaking. Despite being placed on such a small card, the vista seems vast, and the golden tones really do make the whole scene seem regal in a way that’s impossible to fully explain.
Hydaelyn is one of the rare characters who is original to Final Fantasy XIV. She’s the creator of the world on which the game takes place, and a central character through much of the story, especially during Endwalker. This Magic: The Gathering card fully encapsulates her kindness and compassion, showing her in an almost angel-like state.
Don’t worry if these 10 cards don’t appeal to you as they do me, there are 43 others in the collection that may be more up your alley. Here’s the full list:
